Busting a Recession
Here are a
few general pointers for keeping afloat and moving forward
during a recession when you have to closely monitor the economic
climate.
-
Keep a tight
cash flow
Try to reduce
the credit periods that you allow your customers and use all the
credit that you are given by your suppliers.
-
Keep low stock
inventories
There is no
point in having money tied up in stock before it’s required. It
could be in the bank.
-
Look for margins
Is your
product under priced? You may not think so, but if it is selling
well, double check it isn’t too cheap and narrowing your
margins.
It is also a
good idea to call your suppliers in and present a case for
bigger discounts on the materials or services that you require.
-
Watch your
overheads
Look again at
your overheads, check extravagances, but also re-check your
standing orders and direct debits. The bills will have to be
paid eventually, but is paying in advance helping you? It is
also easy to let a direct debit or standing order keep being
paid, even when you no longer need the product or service that
you are paying for. You’re not writing a check so it’s easily
overlooked.
-
Keep promoting
Probably most
important of all, don’t cut your marketing program. They may not
show great instant returns, but research proves that people will
remember those who keep advertising through a recession, even if
they don’t use the services offered immediately. For every
dollar saved in the short term by not advertising, you may well
lose much more money in the long term when trading conditions do
improve, but your sales don’t. So, keep marketing.

Partners in Productivity Tips
We have noticed some customers having a
similar dilemma with their copy machine that may be avoided by
practicing a few simple steps. A common field problem is paper
jamming. For years we were told by the copier manufacturers
that we should fan the paper good before placing it in the
cassette, now we find there is a new way.
Gently bend the stack of paper back and
forth to break it apart and put air spaces between the pages.
Always place the paper curl side down into the cassette.
Some of the paper being used today, if you notice, there is an
arrow on the label of each ream that says: Use or print this
side first. This is because that is the way the paper curls,
and it does make a difference in paper feed efficiency.
HOW MOISTURE PROOF IS YOUR PAPER
The next item to inspect is the inside of
the package that the paper comes in, does it have a moisture
barrier or coating on the inside of the package. A quick test
for the effectiveness of the barrier is try to write on the
inside of the package with a ball point pen. The more skipping
the ball point pen does the better the coating, the better the
moisture barrier. If you, for example write your name and a
good parts of it is blanked out that’s a good coating.
On high humidity days keep opened paper
packages sealed it possible or put the paper into a plastic bag
to keep moisture out. We hope this is helpful information.
